What materials are solar panel racking systems made of?
Common Materials:
- Aluminium: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and commonly used for residential systems.
- Steel: Durable and strong, often used in commercial or large-scale installations.
- Stainless Steel: Offers high corrosion resistance and is used in harsh environments.
Considerations:
- Durability: Material choice affects the lifespan and performance of the racking system.
Racking we use:
- Magma Electrical will only ever supply Clenergy solar racking as we know first hand that they are by far the most superior racking manufacturer we can find. Their in house standards supersede that of the Australian standard and have proven that their product can handle any climate Australia has to offer.
Are there any warranties or guarantees for solar panel racking systems?
Warranties:
- Product Warranty: Clenergy racking systems come with a product warranty that covers defects and performance issues for 25 years.
- Installation Warranty: Installation is covered for 25 years to line up with our racking manufacturer warranty period
What are the building codes and regulations for solar panel racking systems in Australia?
Regulations:
- Compliance: Ensure that the racking system and installation comply with local building codes and Australian Standards (e.g., AS/NZS 1170 for structural design).
How do I know what type of Solar racking to use on my house?
Tile Roofs
Types of Racking Systems:
- Rail-Based Racking: This system involves mounting rails onto the roof structure with brackets, and then attaching the solar panels to these rails. It’s commonly used for tile roofs due to its flexibility and adjustability.
- Rail-less Systems: These systems use mounting brackets that attach directly to the roof without traditional rails. They can be suitable for tile roofs if designed to handle the specific contours and load distribution.
Installation Details:
- Mounting Brackets: Use brackets specifically designed for tile roofs to ensure a secure fit. These often include tile hooks or penetrative mounts that allow for proper sealing and load distribution.
- Flashing: Proper flashing and waterproofing are essential to prevent leaks. Make sure the installation includes high-quality flashing to seal around the mounting points.
Considerations:
- Tile Integrity: Ensure that the installation doesn’t damage or crack the tiles. Professionals will take care to handle tiles carefully and replace any that are damaged.
Tin (Metal) Roofs
Types of Racking Systems:
- Rail-Based Racking: Similar to tile roofs, rail-based systems are often used for metal roofs. However, metal roofs often use special mounting brackets that can attach to the ribs or seams of the roof.
- Direct Mounting: Systems designed for direct mounting onto corrugated metal roofs can use clamps that grip the metal without penetrating it. This method minimises the risk of leaks.
Installation Details:
- Clamps: Use clamps designed for corrugated or standing seam metal roofs to secure the racking system without causing damage.
- Sealing: Ensure that all mounting points are properly sealed to prevent water ingress.
Considerations:
- Roof Type: Ensure the racking system is compatible with the specific type of metal roof you have, whether it’s corrugated or standing seam.
