ARENA boosting Vic EV transition

Back to news

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is providing $2 million to support the Local Council BEV Integration Project in Victoria’s west. The project, involving Wyndham City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, and Brimbank City Council, aims to deploy 65 light and 7 heavy battery electric vehicles (BEVs), along with charging infrastructure.

Key points:

  • The $8.9 million project will transition council fleets to zero-emission vehicles for waste management, parks and road maintenance, and general travel.
  • It will test solutions to challenges like technical issues, costs, and charging infrastructure.
  • The project will demonstrate strategies for easier fleet electrification, supporting Australia’s net-zero targets.
  • ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasized the role of local councils in advancing clean energy and transport decarbonisation.
  • The project will run for three years, ending in June 2027.
  • It is part of the Australian Government’s Driving the Nation Fund, which allocated $500 million for cleaner, cheaper transport solutions.
